Fox Face vs. Teddy Bear Face Pom: Which Is Actually Correct?

Fox Face vs. Teddy Bear Face Pom: Which Is Actually Correct?

Fox face and teddy bear face Pomeranians are not two separate breeds. Both are Pomeranians—they simply differ in muzzle shape, which creates a different visual impression. A correct fox face is no less beautiful than a teddy bear face. What matters more is whether the muzzle is long enough for comfortable breathing and whether the face is balanced.

Are fox face and teddy bear Poms different breeds?

No. “Fox face” and “teddy bear face” are informal nicknames used by owners, not official classifications. International breed standards from kennel clubs do not divide Pomeranians into fox face or teddy bear categories.

Many people hear “fox face” and worry the dog won’t be as cute as a round teddy bear face. In reality, whether a Pom looks fox-like or bear-like depends on the viewer’s perspective and the dog’s current coat stage. A puppy that looks like a teddy bear one month can appear quite different a few months later.

Is a fox face Pom less attractive than a teddy bear face?

No. The belief that fox faces are less attractive than teddy bear faces is a common misconception. A correct, purebred fox face Pom carries an elegant and alert expression that captures the true spirit of the breed.

In our experience, Poms that win at dog shows typically have the standard fox face: refined and bright, with unmistakable presence. A round teddy bear face is still adorable, but “adorable” and “breed-correct” are two different standards. Our philosophy is that a Pom should not only be beautiful but also correct.

What is the correct muzzle-to-skull ratio for a Pomeranian?

The correct ratio is approximately 1:2—the muzzle occupies about one-third and the skull about two-thirds of the head length. The AKC (American Kennel Club) standard specifies a muzzle-to-skull ratio of 1/3 to 2/3. The FCI standard describes approximately 2:4, which is essentially the same proportion.

This is a proportional comparison between two parts of the head, not an absolute measurement in centimeters. A smaller Pom and a slightly larger Pom will have different muzzle lengths in centimeters, but both can have the same balanced ratio. That’s why we don’t use a ruler to determine whether a Pom is fox face or teddy bear face.

How do you tell apart fox face, teddy bear and baby doll Poms?

The simplest way to tell them apart is by looking at the muzzle structure: tapered or squared. That’s the main difference, not muzzle length.

  • Fox face: muzzle tapers to a point like a cone, creating an elegant, refined and alert appearance.
  • Teddy bear face: muzzle is squared and full, giving a round and gentle look.
  • Baby doll face: a blend of the two, maintaining the correct lines of a fox face while adding the fullness of a teddy bear face.

Our puppies fall into the baby doll category. We find this to be a balanced choice: correct enough for the show ring while still melting the hearts of pet owners.

When viewing a puppy in person, you can gently stroke the chin to feel and observe the muzzle structure from both the front and side. A thick coat can obscure the true shape, so don’t rely only on the outer appearance of the fur.

Some dogs have overly long muzzles and larger builds but are sold as Poms. These are likely other Spitz breeds, not true Pomeranians. When choosing a puppy, check the parents and pedigree papers to confirm you’re getting a genuine Pom.

Can an overly short muzzle or flat face affect a Pom’s health?

Yes. Pomeranians with excessively short muzzles or flat faces are prone to long-term health problems, particularly respiratory issues (commonly called brachycephalic airway syndrome). This is why breed standards do not favor extremely short muzzles, even though they look very “baby-like.”

In Vietnam’s hot and humid climate, clear airways are especially important. Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting, so a Pom with a too-short muzzle will struggle more on sweltering days.

If your Pom wheezes, breathes with difficulty or pants with an open mouth even at rest, consult your veterinarian promptly. Do not try home remedies or wait to see if the dog improves on its own.

Why does a Pom’s face change during coat stages?

The thick coat around the head and cheeks dramatically alters the face shape, so a Pom’s appearance can change noticeably through different coat stages. This is most obvious during the shedding phase, often called the monkey stage, when the puppy coat falls out and the adult coat has not yet fully grown in.

That’s why judging a puppy as “fox face” or “teddy bear face” from a single photo is unreliable. We cannot predict exactly how a puppy’s face will look as an adult. For an accurate assessment, view the puppy in person and examine the muzzle structure, not just the coat.

Which face type should you choose?

Choose a healthy puppy with a balanced, appealing face, then love and care for that puppy well. Fox face or teddy bear face is not the most important factor. Focus on three priorities:

  • Good health, clear airways and a muzzle that is not too short.
  • A harmonious face with balanced muzzle-to-skull proportions.
  • A true Pomeranian with clear papers and pedigree.
