Pomeranian tear stains on white fur and home environment
Tear staining in Pomeranians usually starts with their living environment. White-coated Poms show it most clearly, because tears leave stains around the eyes that are easy to see on white fur. At our kennel, we watch three factors most closely: heat, housing and bath water.
Is it a problem if your Pom tears up in the sun?
A little tearing after a sunny play session is fine. It is a reaction to heat, much like sweating in people, and it happens in white, orange and every other coat color.
We still let our puppies out to play in the yard at times. When it is hot, they tear up a little. In a cool place, they do not. After playing, we wipe the eye area clean and put the puppy back in the air-conditioned room as usual.

Poms have a dense coat and a short face, so if they overheat for long, tears can collect at the eye rims and soak into the fur. Do not let your Pom play in the sun for a long time before you wipe its eyes.
Do white Poms need air conditioning 24 hours a day?
At our kennel, yes. Our white Poms stay in air-conditioned rooms day and night. We consider the living environment the most important factor when raising white-coated dogs, because it keeps the fur around the eyes from staining.
Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) stays hot and humid all year. A thick-coated dog that overheats will tear up, and on a white coat the stains show right away. If you want a white Pom, plan to keep your puppy cool from the start. Do not wait until the eye area is already stained.

Can iron-rich water stain white Pom fur?
Yes. Iron-rich water turns white fur yellow and lowers the value of the dog, so bath water for a white Pom must be clean water. Water like this usually contains a lot of iron, and once it soaks into white fur, the yellow shows.
When customers from the Mekong Delta want a white Pom, we often try to talk them out of it. We would rather tell you upfront than have you raise a white Pom and watch its coat turn yellow. If the water at home is not clean, think carefully before choosing a white puppy.

Do Poms of other colors tear up too?
Yes. Heat-related tearing happens in Poms of every coat color. White coats simply show the staining more clearly than other colors.
We handle every color the same way. If a Pom stays in a cool place, there is no problem. If it plays outside for a while and tears up a little, we clean its eyes and then bring it back into the air conditioning. Owners of any color should keep an eye on this.

When should you take your Pom to the vet for tearing?
Take your Pom to the vet if the tearing does not stop even after it is in a cool place, or if it comes with other unusual signs around the eyes. Living conditions are only one of many causes of tear staining. Air conditioning and clean water will not fix every case.

- Tears keep flowing heavily and constantly, even when the dog is in a cool room
- Red or swollen eyes
- Thick discharge that is yellow or green
- Squinting, pawing at the eyes or avoiding light
- Cloudy eyes or abnormal vision
If your Pom shows any of these signs, take it to a veterinary clinic so a vet can examine its eyes. Never put human eye drops in your Pom’s eyes.
